F.I.S.H. Summer Study: Half Truths

FISH (Fellowship In Someone’s Home) will take place throughout the summer on Wednesday Nights from 6pm-8pm. The first hour will be devoted to Highs, Lows, and a Bible Study. The second hour will be devoted to Fellowship such as a game of some sort.

This summer’s study will look into some half truths that are prevalent throughout Christianity based on a book by Adam Hamilton called “Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things the Bible Doesn’t Say”. Some of the things we accept and repeat to others sound so true, and we’ve believed them for so long, that they turn into “sacred cows” – things above question or criticism. In fact, when we do question them, we can become defensive and irritated. We may even believe that if these beliefs aren’t true, the rest of our faith may crumble.

Throughout this summer our youth will spend time diving into 5 half-truths that can be harmful to our understanding of God:

  1. Everything happens for a reason.
  2. God helps those who help themselves.
  3. God won’t give you more than you can handle.
  4. God said it. I believe it. That settles it.
  5. Love the sinner, hate the sin.

These statements certainly aren’t entirely without truth, but taken at face value these Half-Truths can lead down some strange theological paths, and have done so throughout history. They can lead people to conclusions about God which are untrue and may even push them away from God. Half truths, like the ones above, have been used to avoid careful thinking on difficult subjects, justify our own beliefs and prejudices, and – when spoken to others – can bring pain.

This summer our youth (and those of you following along on the blog here) will have an opportunity to do some serious reflection on these half truths which we usually take for granted. Through scriptural study, theological discussions, and real-life stories we will have the opportunity to think through these ideas before we find ourselves in a situation where we are presented with one of these ideas which would cause us to question our faith in a time of crisis.

If you would like to follow along, with a more indepth discussion of all of our topics, please purchase Adam Hamilton’s book, “Half Truths: God Helps Those Who Help Themselves and Other Things The Bible Doesn’t Say,” on which this F.I.S.H. summer study will be based.
